What it is
Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a shellfish that lives in the coastal waters of New Zealand. It is named after the green edge of its shell. Besides being eaten as seafood, it is dried and ground into a powder, or processed into an extract, for use in supplements for people and for animals.
How it is used in products for dogs
In supplements for dogs, green-lipped mussel is often combined with other ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin and sold as chews, tablets or powders. The amount per serving differs a lot between products, so it is worth reading the label.
What we plan for Joint Vital
Our planned Joint Vital chew contains 600 mg of green-lipped mussel per two-chew serving, together with glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, turmeric extract, Boswellia serrata extract and vitamin E. The formulation is a draft and may change. No supplier has been chosen yet, and the product cannot be ordered.
What we do not say
We do not claim that green-lipped mussel, or Joint Vital, prevents, relieves or treats any condition in dogs. If your dog is stiff, limping or seems to be in pain, the right first step is your vet.
A note on allergies
Green-lipped mussel is a shellfish. Dogs with a known shellfish allergy should not be given products that contain it.
